Granite is an igneous rock that we''ve used for building materials for thousands of years. It''s name comes from the Latin word "granum," meaning "grain," which refers to the grains of quartz and feldspar that define granite. This one is from the Barre formation in Vermont.
The U.S. Public Health Service conducted an extensive study of silicosis in the Vermont granite cutting sheds as part of a broad investigation of diseases produced by dust. This 1924 study was the first to measure the relation between the environment and the worker''s physical condition.

The stone in North Jay was a finegrained, light grey granite similar to that in Concord, NH and Barre, VT. The quarries in Redstone produced two different colors of granite: red and green. Therefore, the Maine and New Hampshire Granite Co was able to offer three distinct colors of stone grey from North Jay, plus red and green from Redstone.

Dec 16, 2009 · In the 1930s, the Granite Cutters Association of Barre won one of the most significant victories for workers in the stone industries. Cutters often worked inside closed sheds, carving the stone with pneumatic tools. The dust generated caused many to contract silicosis most Vermont stonecutters died from the disease before the age of 50.

Aug 04, 2015 · Rock of Ages is the grand name of one of Vermont''s oldest quarrying operations. The company started quarrying granite in 1880 and it''s been excavating the same site in Barre ever since. Called a deep hole dimension quarry, it''s a large cavernous hole and nearly 600 feet deep.

In Barre in the early twentieth century seventythree percent of granite workers died from silicosis, a disease brought on by breathing granite dust. One street in Barre was called "La strada delle vedove"—the street of widows. Barre granite workers went on strike in 1915, 1922, 1933, and 1938.
